Lost Dutchman State Park - AZ

Fly back into Phoenix and head out to Lost Dutchman State Park.

The Park is pretty quiet and the view is nice.

We have some fuzzy neighbors . . . some cute . . .

others, not so much . . . .

While Jacob Waltz a German immigrant was lying on his death bed, he told a story of a gold mine that held untold riches. He had said that it laid deep within the Salt River Mountains of the Arizona territory. Since the time of the Dutchman's death, the treasure hunters have came in search of this elusive mine. Some have left poorer than when they had arrived, while others never left at all. Some say that you can still hear the ones that died picking at the rocks, on a silent desert night.
Maybe they should have just looked at the end of the rainbow!

Gary rolls up his sleeves - he's up to the task

It seems like a easy hike.

Didn't find the gold on the Treasure Trail so maybe it's hidden deep in the Mountains, we decide to do the Siphon Draw trail, a 4 mile round trip hike up to the Flat Iron (center of the pic).

Should be a piece of cake!

I think I made a wrong turn!

Looks like smooth sailing from here.

A steady uphill climb

That's the Flat Iron on the right

We've come a long way Baby!

and what a view!

What goes up must come down!  This was a little bit of a bottleneck!

Don't worry Hon!  I'll catch you if you slip!

We started out just before Noon and made it back just in time for the sunset

But we had a howlin good time!

On November 23rd, a small aircraft crashed into the Mountain just below the Flat Iron killing all 6 on board, a man his 3 children, pilot and Mechanic.  We had noted how low planes were flying as we hiked up.  Apparently the FAA lowered the flight path to 5,000 ft from 8000 ft for small aircraft to allow for more commercial traffic through the Phoenix Airport,  Superstition Mts. are 5,000 ft.  Very sad.

Hawaii - The Big Island - Last Day :(

It's our last day in Hawaii and we finally make it to the Paleaku Peace Garden.  We tried twice before - the first time we arrived at closing and the 2nd time it started to rain when we got there - today was perfect.  It is a 7 Acre Botanical Garden and Sanctuary

You walk in and it is instant peace and tranquility

Buddhist Monks visit and created these Mandala's or Sand Paintings.  A Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. A sand mandala is ritualistically destroyed once it has been completed. However they are sometimes left to emanate blessings form the deities they represent.

They also have a Galaxy Garden.  The Galaxy Garden is a 100 foot diameter outdoor scale model of the Milky Way mapped in living plants and flowers.  The Center is a fountain representing a black hole.

Then these must be cats eye nebula's.

I love this place!   This is the Islamic Shrine

The Labyrinth

Feeling much more calm and peaceful we head out and stop for lunch at the Coffee Hut.  We aren't the only ones enjoying a mid-day snack.

Who you lookin at??

Next stop the Greenwell Coffee Farm

We are given a tour of the grounds and the history of Coffee on the Island

Coffee is cultivated between the altitudes of 800 and 2500 feet. Below 800 feet, it is too dry and hot for coffee to thrive. Above 2500 feet, a natural rain forest naturally prevails, the coffee trees bloom and fruit all year long, Kona is the perfect elevation for coffee.

One last walk down by the water and we say farewell to our Sea Turtle friends.

Aloha!

Meanwhile, we keep on Trek'n

Hawaii - The Big Island - Luau

We decided a trip to Hawaii wasn't complete without a Luau so we went to the Royal Kona Resort, Lava and Legends Luau for our last night.
It was a beautiful evening - the skies were threatening for awhile and the couple who sat next to us came through a downpour but it went around us.

We had up front and center seats

The dancers were amazing.

They cooked a pig wrapped in leaves in a pit with hot rocks.

Loaded it up

and hauled it over to the buffet

The food was delicious!

and the entertainment - entertaining!

Especially the fire dance

A great night and a great ending to our Hawaiian vacation!

Till Later,
